The Authors Daniel Kenigsberg & Lauren Hartman quote KatrinaMarie about her mindset and advice to succeed thru this difficult process.
Working with Katrina Peluso has taught me the power of mindset and a patients belief. She has demonstrated that regardless of the circumstances, or medical diagnosis it is faith and belief in the outcome that is the essential ingredient to success for a patient.

This is the period of time responsible for the bizarre images of physicians wearing dark robes, wide-brimmed hats, and masks with long beaks. There was actually method to the madness. These beaks held dried herbs, spices and essential oils which the physician breathed. The robe was doused with a similar fragrant concoction.[3] Scientific evidence today is building support for this seemingly outrageous behavior… many harmful microbes can’t survive in the presence of certain essential oils.[4]
Meanwhile in France another interesting aromatic legend developed around a horrid sounding witch’s brew known as “Marseilles Vinegar” or “Four Thieves Vinegar.” A variety of recipes floated around. One recalled by Scientific American in 1910[5] included things like dried rosemary tops, dried sage flowers, fresh rue, camphor, “spirit,” garlic cloves and vinegar which was to be taken internally for 7 or 8 days “with occasional agitation.” It was said that this “medicated vinegar was invented by four thieves of Marseilles who successfully employed it as a prophylactic during a visitation of pestilence.”[6][7][8][9] For those who don’t travel the renaissance fair circuit, “pestilence” was the medieval term for bubonic plague.
The earliest online English reference found so far is in the 1825 Pharmacologia. After recounting the story of the aromatic vinegar used by the four thieves of Marseilles, it goes on to note that, “It was, however, long used before the plague of Marseilles, for it was the constant custom of Cardinal Wolsey to carry in his hand an orange, deprived of its contents, and filled with a sponge which had been soaked in vinegar impregnated with various spices, in order to preserve himself from infection, when passing through the crowds which his splendour or office attracted. The first plaque raged in 1649, whereas Wolsey died in 1531.” The Pharmacologia then sites the French Codex and The German Dispensatories as possible earlier sources of the vinegar recipes.[10]

Was the concoction actually effective? Despite being branded a “very useless preparation” in a 1854 medical book[11], stories persist that indicate there were certainly positive results, if only because of the garlic. Apparently doctors who carried garlic in their pockets were protected from the plague as were French priests who ate garlic and safely ministered to the dying while the garlic-free English priests fell ill.[12]
But the biggest twist in this tale is yet to be told. In 1966, a book called “Nature’s Medicines” was published with this tasty tidbit…
“In Marseilles, a garlic-vinegar preparation known as the Four Thieves was credited with protecting many of the people when a plague struck that city (1722). Some say that the preparation originated with four thieves who confessed that they used it with complete protection against the plague while they robbed the bodies of the dead. Others claim that a man named Richard Forthave developed and sold the preparation, and that the ‘medicine’ was originally referred to as Forthave’s. However, with the passing of time, his surname became corrupted to Four Thieves.” [13][14]
Could it really be true that the infamous four thieves never existed?! Were they created out of thin air via a centuries-long game of telephone in which the original formula was ultimately as mangled as the creator’s name? We may never know.
Fast forward to the end of the last century and the barely-remembered story takes its first steps toward legendhood. Dr. John R. Christopher, probably the most popular of pioneering US herbalists[15], attached the story to a garlic-heavy formula he created and about which he began educating people. His formula, the story of the four thieves and the possible contribution of the mysterious Mr. Forthave were all mentioned in the April 1977 “garlic” issue of his newsletter, “Concern.”[16]
It was famous French aromatherapy doctor Jean Valnet (1920-1995) who gave the story its essential oil gravitas. In his book, “The Practice of Aromatherapy,” Valnet quotes the archives of the Parliament of Toulouse. He claims the original recipe was revealed by corpse robbers who were caught red-handed in the area around Toulouse in 1628-1631. Given the virulence and deadliness of the plague, the judges were astonished by the indifference of the thieves to contagion.[17]
But D. Gary Young, founder of Young Living, is probably most responsible for the story reaching the legendary status it enjoys today. While at his clinic in Mexico, Young was introduced to the therapeutic possibilities of premium essential oils.[18] He learned that they are hundreds of times more concentrated than the herbs and tinctures he had worked with while studying under pioneers like Norman Walker, Bernard Jenson and, yes, Dr. Christopher. The revelation reshaped his life as he saw dramatic results in his own clinical studies. He went on to start Young Living, a company which now has farms all over the world for the production of essential oils.[19] In 1992, Young created an oil blend that was intended to help protect people from harmful microbes and aid in keeping their immune systems strong. As a student of both Dr. Chistopher and Dr. Valnet, it was only natural for Young to recall the four thieves story. Thieves™ Oil was born.[20] One of the first published explanations of Thieves Oil was in Young’s 1996 book, “Aromatherapy: The Essential Beginning.”[21]
Mounting evidence is demonstrating that the blend’s effectiveness stands up to the legend. Studies at Weaver State University in 1997 showed a 96% reduction of pneumonia bacteria and a 44% reduction of staph bacteria from the air after a mere 10 minutes of exposure.[4] Ongoing studies are also showing unparalleled protection against mold.[22]
The legend, the studies, the pleasant aroma and taste (a welcomed difference from garlic and vinegar recipes), and the convenience have combined to make Thieves Oil the most popular blend of oil sold by Young Living and possibly the most recognized brand in the world of aromatherapy. An entire line of household and hygiene products have sprung up around it. Those who find it difficult to wrap their minds around the usefulness of either a vinegar recipe or an oil blend may better relate to Thieves household cleaner, soap or hand sanitizer. And the taste of Thieves toothpaste, mouthwash and lozenges will certainly be more pleasant than the brew offered by either the four thieves or Mr. Forthave.

Awe-tisim Awareness Month
My son and I were featured in the Southampton Press of Long Island. I share my thoughts about why and encouraging others to become more sensitive and aware to the many different Faces on the…. what I call AWE-tistic spectrum and not so much learning disabled by differently ABLED.
In support of the outstanding Special Education programs in our School District and faced with the decision to cut back programs due to budget cuts I testified at our School Board meeting from a Mothers Heart of the benefits and necessity for our programs to remain at the high standard they are and why.

The Trellis of Love
“Rules”
The root meaning of the Latin and Greek Word translated as “Rule” is “Trellis”
Rules and guidance establishes
A framework on which a child can grow.
Remember also that just as The plant climbing a Trellis
is allowed to find its’ own path within that structure;
Without anymore interference…
too grow into its own unique and beautiful pattern.
So it is with children….
The space in which the plant moves is open, albeit not without boundaries.
Guiding the plant too not only grow out
But to “Grow Up”,
reaching towards the warmth Of the Creators’ Love
KatrinaMarie Peluso
- I wrote this one day when I found out that the word for rules was rooted in Trellis…pun intended.
I wrote this as a reminder to myself to give my one year old son at the time structure in the form of
rules. That each time I did instruct him with something he didn’t necessarily want to hear….that it would help him grow up so to speak reaching for the sky instead of bent over and crawling on the ground only to be trampled on.
Today he is 9 and I still have to remind myself of this…especially since his resistance and arguments are getting more intense or clever.
However……….just now as I was posting this and going to leave it as is…I thought do we ever stop needing a Trellis…………support, structure, something tangible to lean upon. I know I do.
Isn’t that why organized doctrine and religion continues to flourish. Some look to government, family, jobs. Rules of how things are done or suppose to be. Security or structure…take on all kinds of forms. Finding answers on how to do this thing called life…….successfully. Today and through out history.
The bottom line is we all want to be supported, guided to reach for the stars. It is easier with support or defined rules of how to do so than struggle against gravity by ourselves. When we get tired we can just lean on our trellis in whatever form that takes for us and rest for a while until we get a second wind to achieve another growth spirt.
The funny thing is as much as we want the security of the structure and support we rail against it at the same time. Imagine if a plant……….a beautiful rose bush tried to pull away from the trellis it was tied too.
If it succeeded it would fall to the ground and begin to creep along becoming more wild looking as the weeks passed.
No…the roses don’t resist when attatched they just willingly and freely fill every rail climbing as High as the Trellis will take them.
There are rules established for all of our safety and benefit. Human rules change and adjust with the social needs of that generation.
However spiritual laws never change. Mainly the law of LOVE…………or a another way to describe it is the principle of LOVE.
How is that a rule……….well………..think of it more like a structure or a Trellis….an unchanging firm and solid support that will help each and everyone of us reach for the Light.
And in so doing we can grow in magnificent beauty…….Blessing all that behold us and breath in our fragrance.
We were all created by love. That is our Trellis while planted and rooted on earth. We all are bound by LOVE…How much LOVE do we have in our lives.?
In our Family, friends, vocation, hobbies, jobs, careers, we want love in all of it.
We search endlessly in all areas for love. It is the only solid Force and genuine Structure and support we need to reach our potential.
If we don’t resist Love in all the forms that it reaches out TO us, and if we don’t resist love trying to reach out THRU us we will be at peace. If we relax into Love and let Love guide us upward and onward.
Where the Law of Love is……. there is Liberty or Freedom….Love unto others as you would have others love unto you….Love others AS you love yourself……easier said then done sometimes.
Honestly I feel myself resist that last line…why? Because all the people that irritate me pop right in my thoughts.
How about you? And do you also feel justified for NOT acting very loving towards them….So I take a second to think about that……I quite my mind chatter with this…….
Imagine that Love is the Trellis you are bound to………just relax into it…….don’t resist……..feel the support of Gods Love……………let it fill you with comfort and security that it will always be there……………it will NEVER let you go…by its’ very nature CAN NOT let you go….you are bound together……..
Imagine that you CAN grow stronger, upward by leaning upon the Trellis of LOVE.
By doing so you will grow more and more intertwined and enmeshed……….what would that feel like………you aren’t Alone……Always supported.
As I close my eyes and breath deeply it feels good, big, comforting, secure and peaceful.
When Love fills us up it doesn’t seem so difficult to extend Love out.
Life can be renewed and breathed into any situation no matter how dismal and dead it may appear today….Tomorrow it can be renewed and transformed by LOVE. Your relationship with yourself, with God, with others, with your job or lack thereof, in your finances………..imagine LOVE breathing life into your most difficult situation and resurrecting it this year as it evolves and you witness the flowers of progress bloom.
So I will remind myself of this…even if I let go…I will not fall.
Helping me to handle the worries and many irritations that come my way. To let go of them and hang onto the Trellis of Love.
Weathering and being equally grateful for the rain as well as the sunshine that beats down on my life.
This moment I am grateful for the rules and secure unchanging structure of LOVE that support and guide me onward and upward.
May the Trellis of Love……….bring support and structure to us as we seek to hold on and trust in that Love….
Love to you,
